Denver Family Photographer | Maternity Photographs

Maternity photographs. Even though I’m a photographer, when I was pregnant with my son, the idea of taking pictures of me all swollen and big was pretty terrifying. I had gone from toned and in shape, running 6 miles a day, to pregnant and bloated and uncomfortable – my daily exercise being a one mile walk to the local coffee shop for a pastry (or two!) – in the blink of an eye. Photographs that documented how I looked, when I didn’t feel like I looked my best, seemed silly.

But I was missing the point. Yes, maternity photographs document your pregnant belly. But these images aren’t about how you look, or how you think you look, while carrying a baby.

Maternity photos capture a time in your life that is unlike any other. There is so much love, anticipation, emotion, hope, wonder, and awe wrapped up in those 9 months. The expecting parents are in a place that connects them in a new & different way. It’s a quiet time. An intimate time.

And that’s what I love about being a photographer and doing a maternity session. The intimacy. The emotion. The quiet connection. The ability to capture some of that love and hope and excitement and have it show up in pictures. While you may not feel like YOU are at your most beautiful (just FYI – you are!), the fact is that it is an incredibly beautiful time in your life. That, my friends, is worth documenting.

I don’t have many pics of myself when I was pregnant, and I definitely don’t have any with my husband, in a quiet embrace, taking in all of what was ahead of us. And that is something that I regret. Because I can vividly remember what that was like. I can remember the nerves and the energy and the hopeful dreams. I remember laying in bed reading books about how my baby was growing and just feeling so overcome with love and excitement. I remember a lot of it, but I also know that those memories will fade as time passes.

Photographs are absolutely an essential part of our memories. They are the tangible. They are the reminder. They are what we hold in our hands and look at to invoke feelings and emotions of times long ago. While being pregnant for 9 months can feel like an eternity, and there are plenty of things you would care NOT to remember… heart-burn, swollen ankles, back pain, sleepless nights, hormones & emotional swings… in the grand scheme of things, it is a tiny little blip on the radar. But it is a monumental blip. A life-changing time. A nine months in which who you are will change and take shape and grow roots. And it is one hundred percent worthy of capturing in photographs.

So, let’s do it. Let me be your photographer and help you remember today. Get in touch to schedule your maternity session today!

Photos below are from a 2014 maternity and newborn session with the incredibly awesome Martin family. They understood the importance of capturing it all. And thankfully we did in time – Baby Boy Martin was born only a few days after our maternity photo shoot!
